Hi Brian,
as far as I know, the problem you are discribing comes from the driver you are using. Check the alsa page: http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-Intel
ICH7 seems not to be supported. But there are several options you can give to your driver during the install. Maybe you´re lucky and one of these solves your problem.
If you start your synths inside a variable (e.g. a = {Sinosc.ar(400)*0.6}) you can start them with a.play and stop them individually with a.free. You can restart the interpreter inside emacs with M-x sclang-start.
Hope it helps,
Björn

The server problem is as follows: it sounds really nasty! The output of {Sinosc.ar(400)*0.6},play. sounds like a sawtooth cutting through cement if the volume is high; if the volume is low, I can't hear the note at all, only clipping. alsamixer says alsa is using the analog chip of my Intel 82801G ICH7 sound card... might that be the cause?
My other problem is: How do I stop all synths without "stopping the interpreter"? If i use "Stop the interpreter" emacs' sclang menu, supercollider disconnects from jackd and i can't get sclang working again without restarting emacs.
is anyone out there using a system76 laptop?
