You can use Matt Wright's 'sendOSC' <http://www.cnmat.berkeley.edu/ 
OpenSoundControl/clients/sendOSC.html> to send messages directly from  
a terminal window, about as bare-bones as it gets.

Really? I use it all the time and have no problems at all... What  
errors are you getting?
