That is what I was saying about class compliance. I don't know if the  
Firestudio does this as well, but the Firebox uses a standard  
protocol for audio over Firewire, so it will generally just work  
where ever you plug it in. In other words, it is just using the  
system drivers. I haven't had any performance/latency issues with  
using CoreAudio drivers on OS X, but I haven't benchmarked against  
MOTU or something else. Apple's drivers are usually pretty good so it  
surprises me that you think they are less optimized.

The nice thing about class compliance is it will continue working  
when apple releases 10.5 and makes other changes. Other drivers tend  
to play catch up.
