I'll assume you meant practical and/or user-related ones then.

That's not what I was trying to do, but that wouldn't necessarily be  
an invalid objection.

Yes, a little. Since a synthdef file contains a version number this  
could be dealt with transparently though. I think this is what  
happened when variants were added.
