That might be one solution, but why that rather than storing the spec  
itself? That way it's portable, and there's no extra bookkeeping  
client side to keep from losing custom specs.

Or maybe both would be possible so that you could use standard ones?

I think this should be optional, IAC, so it wouldn't bulk up every def.
