Using the term "musician" for synth timbres is confusing - why not
"voice" or "instrument"? Usually instruments make sounds, and
musicians play the instruments.

And what if multiple (human) players are controlling multiple synths
(which may have the same name) on the same network?

This is why id's are desirable.
