Actually I believe, the only reason to still use midi is because it does
a 12 notes per octave division. ;) A "new midi" for alternate tunings
should either use frequencies or send raw numbers that don't have any
implied musical meaningi (like frequencies). The latter IMO belongs to
the composing software or: the composition completly. But (modern)
compositions don't need standardization. Or to say it in Miller
Puckette's words, who when asked, if he thinks the invention of MIDI was
a big step forward or a big step backwards, once answered: "It was a big
step sideways."
